Online Education

There are tons of online programs. I personally attended both traditional and online-only schools and I know someone that has taught for various online schools and traditional schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Schools tend to vary in price, so we could say online schools are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my Ph. D through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

I have three basic recommendations for everyone looking into online/distance education. They all have to do with exploring; after all, you have to defend your assets.

1. Make certain that you have triple checked their accreditation. First, they tell you what it is, then you go to that accrediting body’s website (not through the link provided by the school), and thirdly you would visit the department of education to see what they have to say. Do your diligent research into the institutions once you have narrowed down to a couple. You can look at the Better Business Bureau for more information on the college.
2. You must have extreme self motivation and be able to teach yourself per say. This means that you will not have someone telling you verbally, so it is up to you to get the information from the course room, text, and other resources. The best way to look at it is like a guided independent study course.
3. Review your goals, personal and professional. Make sure that the school that you are going to offers the programs that match your goals. Do not settle. There are many programs that are similar, but you have to make the ultimate decision. Do not let it be based on finances and length of program, but the fact that when you are finished or near finished you will be able to assume your proper place in the career field sought.

Finally, look at marketing yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

The worth of an Online masters degree for an MBA depends entirely upon the online school’s reputation. An MBA from the University of Phoenix probably isn’t much but an MBA from Thunderbird is something that a potential employer will recognize and hold in high esteem.

The point to keep in mind is that many MBA employers are highly education sensitive. They do very much care about the reputation of the school you attended. The school should at least be decent, if you really want to use the MBA to advance your career. It doesn’t have to be elite (although that’d be lovely, wouldn’t it?) but it must be reputable. No matter where you get your MBA, make sure that it is AACSB accredited, or some employers will refuse to look at you, and make sure it has a good name even beyond that.

Thunderbird (really intriguing program, and well ranked)

I’m sure there are others as well. The easiest way to find them is not to search for “online MBA” as most of the ones that come up are crappy for profit schools. Instead, find an MBA program that you like, offline (perhaps use US News & World Report’s MBA rankings lists as a starter) and then check each of their websites to see if they also offer the MBA online. And don’t forget to check schools in Florida – going to a fairly localish school online can be a nice way to blur that “online” bit on your resume. From a glance, an employer need not know that you did it online at all, if it’s in any sort of commutable distance.

Another option for you may be to find an in-person weekend MBA program, such as the ones offered by Kellogg, Michigan State, Johns Hopkins, and U Cal Berkeley. Perhaps U of F offers one? Or even your current school? If not, and you have the cash and time, people actually fly to, say, Berkeley for the weekend, take their courses, then fly back. Shocking, but true; but when you consider the very strong rep of that school, Kellogg, and Michigan State, I can understand it.

Getting to a firm understanding of the costs for doing your masters degree online will require you to make a few decisions upfront. What kinds of masters degree are you thinking of pursuing? Is it a one year degree or a two year program? Will the program require you to attend live classroom sessions for a small period of time?

Next important question you have to answer is the choice of college. While most colleges today offer an online option, you still need to pick and choose your preferred college to get your degree from. Choosing a private university will obviously cost more than choosing a state university and in the same vein choosing an ivy league school will set you back more than your ‘A’ grade college or university.

Once you are clear on the exact degree and college, go to their website or find out from the student’s admission office the average costs per credit hour for their graduate classes. All you need to do then is to multiply this number with the number of credit hours you need to get your masters degree. Ofcourse, you will need to add fees and book supplies to this number. Typically miscellaneous fees from the university should be a few hundred dollars and books and supplies will set you back by $400 per semester. Remember these numbers are average numbers and yours might vary depending on the school and the supplies you need for your degree.

If I were to put a number on the tuition costs, then I would go with $8000 for an online masters degree in a state university.

If you are interested in a career in medicine, there are options that you might not even have considered. Rather than going to medical school to study western medicine, you might consider studying traditional chinese medicine by attending acupuncture school. Acupuncture online courses, acupuncture online school and school resources abound especially as the practice and method of treatment is taking hold in the western world.

Acupuncture goes back more than 3000 years, and is widely used to treat a range of diseases urinary tract to ear nose and throat diseases to diseases asthma, to depression, anxiety, and even drug addiction. After attending acupuncture school, you will be able to treat practically anything that western doctor can treat with a few simple tools.

An acupuncturists main tool is a thin, flexible needle. When it is inserted into the patient, strangely enough, it doesn’t hurt like an injection does. This is because it is very thin, and is not inserted very deeply, while an injection is given through a thick, hollow needle stuck deep into a vein.

These acupuncture needles are inserted into certain points along meridians. In acupunture school, they teach that the meridians are special channels in the human body, along which energy, called Qi, flows. This energy regulates all bodily processes. When it flows strongly and evenly, the body is healthy, but when the flow is disturbed, or if there is not enough Qu, it results in diseases. Through the acupuncture point, a practitioner can regulate the flow of Qi to correct diseases in the body.

Acupuncture is not necessarily used alone. Acupuncture school will, in addition, often teach other traditional chinese healing arts, such as herbology, bodywork, and the use of diet to enhance health. While Western medicine concerns itself mostly with correcting health problems once the become very serious, Chinese medicine concerns itself as much with prevention as with treatment. It is much better, and in the long run, easier, to prevent disease than to cure it.

Because it has not been completely accepted by the western medical establishment, many people assume that accupuncture is quackery. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most states have a board that oversees the practice of accupuncture and require up to four years of formal schooling. In many cases, to graduate acupuncture school, not only must a student understand principals of acupuncture, herbology, and oriental theory and diagnosis, but also biology, organic biochemistry, anatomy, history of medicine, and even clinical medicine. And because of the rigorous standards applied to the practice of acupuncture, as well as its proven results, it is rapidly gaining popularity and acceptance in the west.

Acupuncture online courses help train candidates, but are no substitute for real school. Using an Acupuncture online school may not be the greatest way to train, but if it is the only option you could explore it. Don’t ignore it because it is electronic.

Many health plans are beginning to cover acupuncture treatments, recognizing its ability to prevent diseases from becoming more serious, and the affordability of its simple treatments compared to expensive medications and elaborate tests preferred by western medication. As a tutor, I often use 1st grade spelling words to help my students improve their spelling, however these spelling lists are not a magical solution all by themselves. There is a lot of talk right now about the nursing shortage and the effect it is going to have on health care services in this country. This is a great advantage, which is why accelerated nursing programs were created. Academic institutions recognize this and develop their curriculum to attract these types of students.

Accelerated nursing programs are perfect for some one who is looking for a different career, and has always been interested in health care. After completion of the programs, graduate nurses are qualified to apply to sit for licensure in their state, and when they pass boards, they are granted a Registered Nurse (RN) license. Many credits will also transfer to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, for which there are also accelerated programs available for students who are working full-time and family obligations too. Just like anything else, not all accelerated nursing programs are created equal; some are better than others, and cost as well as curriculum varies. People interested in applying for an accelerated nursing program should research each one and make the best possible choice based on cost, length of curriculum, learning experiences offered, pass rate for licensure exams, accreditation, and overall reputation.
