Is Federal Student Aid considered a loan or grant?

I have already filled out my FAFSA and was wondering if I will be qualifiying for loans as well as qualifying for grant money that I wont be required to pay back. This is, of course, assuming that I qualify. Thanks.

The term "Financial Aid" is a broad term used to identify many kinds of assistance one gets to go to school. Financial Aid can be loans, grants, work study, parent loans, scholarships, etc.

When you filled out the fafsa, it asked you if you were interested in Loans, or Work study, or Neither or Both. They automatically assume you want grants, but depending on how you answered the above question will determine if you are offered loans, parent loans and work study.

Anyone can qualify for loans, by the way. Only very poor families qualify for grants.

It could be either. The government will use your information to give you what you’re eligible for.

Federal Student Aid can even be work-study (where it’s like a job and you can work up to 10 hours a week). It’s kind of like a grant except you have to work (on or off-campus) for the money and you don’t get it right away.
