How Can I Legally Get Rid Of My Student Loans Debt Without Paying?

Is there a way for me to legally stop paying my student loan. I have about $12000 in debt and have been paying it for close to 2 years now. I am looking for some kind of relief but apparently I cannot refinance my loan unless I go back to school. It just seems too much at this point and I am looking at all possible ways to stop paying and get rid of my student loan.

Before we get into your options, we should first point out that even considering defaulting on your loans is not recommended. If your student loan goes into default, then you will have more problems to worry about. Your credit score will go into a free fall and getting it back to a decent level will take time and effort. A bad credit score will mean you will struggle to get credit and if you do manage to find a lender then you will be paying an exorbitant rate of interest. It is a vicious cycle and one that is best avoided.

So what your options then? How can you get out of your student loan debt legally and ideally without paying . Well, the only option you have to get out of your student debt is if you qualify for a student loan forgiveness program. The catch though is that a student loan discharge or forgiveness program is only applicable for federal loans.

Some of the circumstances where your federal student loan is forgiven is listed below. Remember certain conditions do apply and there may be restrictions on the max loan amount that is discharged.

  • If you perform military service
  • Perform volunteer service in organizations such as the AmeriCorps and Peace Corps.
  • If you become a full time teacher in an elementary or secondary school that serves low income families.
  • Practice medicine in certain types of communities.

If you have a private loan then unfortunately you are out of luck. If you do not qualify for student loan discharge or forgiveness, then our suggestion would be to explore temporarily stop paying your student loan by applying for a loan deferment or loan forbearance. This will give you some respite and time that you can use to work out your finances. How long can you defer your student loan will depend on if it is a private student loan or a federal loan. The maximum deferment period for a federal loan is 36 months. With private loans deferment periods vary and you will need to contact your lender for more information.

If you have many student loans then you should also explore consolidating your loans. This will help in reducing your monthly outflow and help ease the monthly payments you make.

What Can I Do With A Bachelors degree in Business Administration?

A quite frequent question we hear or have experienced all the time is what next after my degree? In this article we are looking at business degrees in particular and exploring our options.

Once you’ve completed or are nearing completion of your bachelors degree or even your masters degree in business, it is natural to turn your thoughts to your next course of action. So what are your options.

  1. Start Working -

Straightforward choice, pretty much what you probably set out to do when you joined college for that management degree in the first place. If this is still your preferred goal, then start getting active and interacting with your college  placement cell. Nothing can beat landing your first post graduation job while you are still in college. Business schools take pride in their on campus placement initiatives and you should look to take advantage of this as much as possible.

  2. Teaching -

Slowly but surely teaching is becoming a popular option among many business graduates. We get many questions asking us our thoughts and ideas around teaching as a profession for a business degree graduate.  An example is below (name withheld for privacy).

“I have a bachelors degree in Business Administration, but I I want to be a teacher. Should I go back to school for an education degree? Or would it be easier/faster to go back to school to get my masters to teach in a technical college/vocation school? What are my options for employment?“

Personally you should look at a teaching career only if it is something you are inclined to and not get into it because of paucity of jobs or other personal reasons. However I quite agree that sometimes you have very little choice and earning a living becomes a priority and teaching can be a rewarding career even if you pursue it for a short while. Here are some of the things you need to become a business or management teacher

First and foremost is education. A Bachelor of Science with a Business Major or a Bachelor of Science in Business with an education component. Usually though, teaching at a College or University level will require you to have a Masters in Business Administration or in some cases even a Ph.D in a field such as Marketing might be the standard.

If you are looking to teach at a high school level then you need to ensure that you are state licensed. Each state has varying requirements and we plan on listing each state requirements shortly to help you get better prepared. To be state licensed you will need to appear and clear the required certification exam. (Example- Texas Classroom teacher requirements)

  3. Start your own Business

A popular choice these days, more and more business graduates are following their dream of starting their own company. Many students coming out of business school have very little interest in joining or going back to the workplace. Instead they would rather start something on their own and with venture capital easy to come by coupled with the rise of angel funding and super angels, we are in some sort of a start up boom at the moment.

  4. Study further

Finally, you could look into further studies to improve your qualifications for that dream job. This choice is really dependent on what your preferred career plans are. If you are looking to become a teacher and would like to teach at a University level, then yes, study further, do your masters because without which your chances of landing a teaching assignment is very slim. On the other hand if you are looking to start earning immediately then finding a job becomes your number 1 priority.

Is An Online Masters Degree Worth Anything?

The worth of an Online masters degree for an MBA depends entirely upon the online school’s reputation. An MBA from the University of Phoenix probably isn’t much but an MBA from Thunderbird is something that a potential employer will recognize and hold in high esteem.

The point to keep in mind is that many MBA employers are highly education sensitive. They do very much care about the reputation of the school you attended. The school should at least be decent, if you really want to use the MBA to advance your career. It doesn’t have to be elite (although that’d be lovely, wouldn’t it?) but it must be reputable. No matter where you get your MBA, make sure that it is AACSB accredited, or some employers will refuse to look at you, and make sure it has a good name even beyond that.

So some decent MBA programs that do offer MBAs online include:

Duke University
Drexel
Carnegie Mellon
Penn State
Ball State
U Nebraska – Lincoln
Thunderbird (really intriguing program, and well ranked)
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Rensselaer Polytechnic (an up and coming program)

I’m sure there are others as well. The easiest way to find them is not to search for “online MBA” as most of the ones that come up are crappy for profit schools. Instead, find an MBA program that you like, offline (perhaps use US News & World Report’s MBA rankings lists as a starter) and then check each of their websites to see if they also offer the MBA online. And don’t forget to check schools in Florida – going to a fairly localish school online can be a nice way to blur that “online” bit on your resume. From a glance, an employer need not know that you did it online at all, if it’s in any sort of commutable distance.

Another option for you may be to find an in-person weekend MBA program, such as the ones offered by Kellogg, Michigan State, Johns Hopkins, and U Cal Berkeley. Perhaps U of F offers one? Or even your current school? If not, and you have the cash and time, people actually fly to, say, Berkeley for the weekend, take their courses, then fly back. Shocking, but true; but when you consider the very strong rep of that school, Kellogg, and Michigan State, I can understand it.

What Is The Difference Between Financial Aid And A Student Loan?

A student loan is one of the many options you have to fund your education. The terms “Financial Aid” is used to broadly cover the following

  • Scholarships
  • Federal Grants
  • Federal Work Study Programs
  • Federal Student Loans
  • Private Student Loans

We have detailed articles here at Studentelligence.com explaining each of the above at great length. Do take the time and go through each. If you are beginning to explore financial aid we recommend that you always look at scholarships and grants as your first option for funding your education. The reason we recommend this first is that scholarships and grants do not require to be paid back. The money you get as part of a scholarship or grant is yours to keep and to use for your education related expenses.

Most often you will find that only a portion of your education related expenses will be met by scholarships and grants. It is then that you need to look at federal student loans to cover the rest of the costs. Finally you should only turn to private student loans only when you’ve exhausted all other options listed. Good luck !!

How Much Does An Online Masters Degree Cost In The U.S.?

Getting to a firm understanding of the costs for doing your masters degree online will require you to make a few decisions upfront. What kinds of masters degree are you thinking of pursuing? Is it a one year degree or a two year program? Will the program require you to attend live classroom sessions for a small period of time?

Next important question you have to answer is the choice of college. While most colleges today offer an online option, you still need to pick and choose your preferred college to get your degree from. Choosing a private university will obviously cost more than choosing a state university and in the same vein choosing an ivy league school will set you back more than your ‘A’ grade college or university.

Once you are clear on the exact degree and college, go to their website or find out from the student’s admission office the average costs per credit hour for their graduate classes. All you need to do then is to multiply this number with the number of credit hours you need to get your masters degree. Ofcourse, you will need to add fees and book supplies to this number. Typically miscellaneous fees from the university should be a few hundred dollars and books and supplies will set you back by $400 per semester. Remember these numbers are average numbers and yours might vary depending on the school and the supplies you need for your degree.

If I were to put a number on the tuition costs, then I would go with $8000 for an online masters degree in a state university.
