College Major-How to Choose

One of the toughest decisions that high school seniors face is choosing a college major. This decision may be easy for some, but for the majority of students entering an institution of higher learning, choosing a college major was a difficult process. Students pursuing an education not only want to be gainfully employed using the chosen college major, but they want to excel in this field (or they should want to), and not struggle through required courses if their heart really isn’t into it. Wouldn’t you agree? You surely wouldn’t want to go through med school, all the while hating the science courses and failing miserably. Some of us may also have dreams of being a famous writer, which is an honorable goal, but something has to sustain the finances in the meantime.

The internet has lots of resources on finding a college major, like by matching interests and high school test scores to find the best school and degree program. All colleges and universities post lists of college majors offered, to help prospective students decide the best areas to pursue. You should also visit Amazon at www.amazon.com or your local bookstore for books on how to choose a college major. These can be quite helpful in narrowing down all your choices, and may even steer you away from a few that may seem attractive to the ego, but not practical for any number of reasons. High school students have other resources available to them as well; school counselors are an excellent resource person whom every student should consult in planning a college major, and subsequent college choices.

The end result of course, is to have that college degree in hand, which will pave the way to the future. Don’t let high tuition costs dissuade you from choosing a college major that you know you would excel in. There are lots and lots of tuition assistance programs, scholarships, grants, fellowships, paid internships, work study, in addition to other types of student loan repayment programs. Choose a college major that holds your interest, one that you can make enough at to repay your students loans, and that stimulates you intellectually and professionally. Don’t choose something that you’re only going to be extremely bored with in five to ten years. You may want to change careers twenty years down the road, just try to choose a college major that you can build upon, that will open doors for you throughout your life.

Accelerated Nursing Programs For Aspiring Nurses

Nurses are probably the most in demand group right now, and it is a career that is quite rewarding. Not only do nurses make good money, but they get to help people every day of their workweek, and often set their own hours. Although it might seem overwhelming to train do be a nurse, with an accelerated nursing program you can greatly cut the amount of time it takes to become one, and be at it in your new career in no time. I had a friend who took one of the accelerated RN programs, and she is now practicing at a leading state hospital, enjoying her life more than ever. Although there are other ways to be a nurse than taking an accelerated nursing program, why would you want to dawdle when you could be part of this exciting profession today.

Of course, accelerated nursing programs are not for everyone. To really get the most out of an accelerated nursing program, you must be sure that you have the time to dedicate to your training. For example, if you work full time it is probably not even an option. You simply will not have time for an accelerated nursing program and your job, and there are so few of us who can afford to actually take time off of working, with the economy as it is. The good news is that, even if you cannot take an accelerated nursing program, you will probably be able to take classes at night to fit around your work schedule, and work towards your nursing degree at your own pace.

Although an accelerated nursing program is far less commitment than a full medical degree, it is still a good idea to make absolutely sure that nursing is what you want to do with your life before committing to it. You might want to talk to some nurses and find out about their jobs. Because of the shortage of nurses around the country, many hospitals will be most accommodating if you wish to ask them questions or interview their staff. You might even be able to sit in on a class at an accelerated nursing program to see what it is like, or perhaps to follow a nurse around and observe his or her workday first hand. That way, if you do decide to get into nursing and pursue it as a job, you will be completely ready.

Meditation Techniques for Students Dealing With Stress

When most people think of meditation, they think of sitting in lotus position for hours at a time, either feeling quite peaceful, or feeling quite miserable, and desperately trying to feel peaceful.

This image of meditation, though partially correct, is not conducive to inner peace.

It is based on two erroneous beliefs.

  1. There is a right and a wrong way to meditate.
  2. You must leave every day life and sit quietly in order to meditate.

Neither of these two beliefs are particularly helpful, and, more importantly, they miss the spiritual principle that Life is the Best Mediation Practice.

Let us examine the above two erroneous beliefs, and see if we can clarify what mediation and “Life as the Meditation” are really about.

Firstly, there is no “wrong” in meditating. If you feel you are doing it wrong, then that feeling should become your mediation. Turn “wrongness” into “rightness.” IN other words, do not try to change what you are experiencing. That is the key to joy. Nothing needs to change on the inside. If you are uncomfortable or worried then let those feelings flow. Take the breaks off. Trying to control them is futile. Instead, be at peace with them. Be at peace with your uncomfortableness.

Deep meditation always transcends ideas of right and wrong. It may sound strange, but just as there is no way to do meditation wrong, there is also no way to do meditation right. This means that deep and true medition is about the integration of apparent opposites. When right integrates with wrong, they cancel each other out. They blend and they merge, just like the yin yang symbol. Who you are, your truest nature lies in the middle. The middle is where the deepest meditation comes from.

One way to help integrate the opposites, and experience the center, is through practicing walking meditation. Walking meditation helps integrate “motion” and “stillness.” In walking meditation, you learn to be still on the inside, while moving on the outside. This is the sacred integration that engenders peace.

Once you get used to walking meditation, it starts to become obvious that anything can be a meditation. Doing dishes, walking the dog, folding laundry, and so on. There is no reason to separate meditation from daily living. You must join the two together. You must unify the poles.

All meditation starts now. It has already begun. Do not look for it in lotus position. It is always right here and now. Do not look for how to meditate correctly, instead let what ever arises be your meditation. You are whole and complete now, uncomfortable feelings and all, and your meditation is a reflection of that wholeness. Ride that reflection naturally and effortlessly, and you will discover true integration in your self.

Major Depression-Signs and Prevention

College can be long, lonely and isolating. Some students develop depression, which is passing, but if it lingers it can become more serious.

Major depression can be quite severe and rob those diagnosed with this debilitating mental illness of their ambition to live. Unlike passing bouts of depression related to daily occurrences or life events, major depression is persistent and can be accompanied by other mental disorders as well, such as anxiety, paranoia, mania, and suicidal tendencies. Major depression can occur at any age to anyone, gender and ethnicity aside. This mental illness can become so cumbersome that sufferers cannot even get out of bed at times or participate in any favorite leisure activities that they enjoyed in the past.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which you can visit online at www.nami.org, approximately 9.9 million adults are afflicted with this condition in any given year. Of all mental illnesses, major depression is the most debilitating and is the leading cause of disability in the United States and many other developed countries. More than twice as many women than men are affected, and if untreated episodes can last from six months to a year or more, and lead to more serious situations, such as suicide. One a major depressive episode has occurred, it is highly likely that another episode will occur within that person’s lifetime.

There are different types of treatments for major depression, which usually include prescription drug treatment and psychotherapy. Of course before treatment can begin, the person suffering from symptoms of major depression must seek help or be encouraged to do so by friends and family. Major depression doesn’t just happen over night. It may start from a significant life event or develop slowly over a period of time, and symptoms may be very subtle at first, and the more severe the symptoms, the longer it will take for treatment to be effective. The most common symptoms patients with major depression report are feeling tired, sad, tearful, irritable, lack of appetite, or thoughts of self-harm.

If you or a loved one is suffering from major depression, then seek help from a qualified professional that can initiate treatment and get you or your loved one back on the track of life, and back to being happy. No one wants to spend their life in a bucket of tears, and no one has to, not with all the great new drug therapies and treatments available for major depression. It is possible to live symptom free with the right treatment, not to say that a relapse will never occur, but it will greatly improve quality of life for those who might have never thought it possible.

Highest Paying Jobs, Even in a Recession.

The highest paying jobs always belong mostly to medical professionals, legal representatives, and science and technology professionals and specialists. These are core professions, that tend to not fluctuate with the economy or dot com bubble (remember!). So for students entering the work force, it is a good idea to at least see what professions will offer good pay. Then extrapolate from there as to whether that is a viable career for you and your interests. Remember, a career in not just job, and a job is not a career. But a good career, that is tolerable, pleasant and meaningful can fund interests that are less lucrative. For example, it’s difficult to be a photographer and work consistently sometimes, but a doctor who is a serious photographer has sufficient means to take any courses they want, purchase any equipment they want, and generally do the passion at a very high level. Just something to consider.

Here, for example, are the top, or highest paying jobs (based on median statistics):

MEDIAN GREATER THAN $145,600 YEARLY
Anesthesiologists
General Internists
Obstetricians and Gynecologists
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
Orthodontists
Prosthodontists
Psychiatrists
Surgeons
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $140,350 YEARLY
Chief Executive Officers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $137,090 YEARLY
Family Practitioners
General Practitioners
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $135,730 YEARLY
General Pediatricians
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $129,250 YEARLY
Airline Pilots
Copilots
Flight Engineers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $123,060 YEARLY
General Dentists
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $102, 030 YEARLY
Air Traffic Controllers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $97,630 YEARLY
Engineering Managers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $97,320 YEARLY
Astronomers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $94,930 YEARLY
Lawyers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $94,400 YEARLY
Podiatrists
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $93,070 YEARLY
Judges
Magistrate Judges
Magistrates
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $92,570 YEARLY
Computer Systems Managers
Information Systems Managers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $88,660 YEARLY
Natural Sciences Managers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $88,500 YEARLY
Petroleum Engineers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $88,410 YEARLY
Optometrists
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $87,640 YEARLY
Marketing Managers
MEDIAN GREATER THAN $87,450 YEARLY
Physicists

But considering that not all of us want to be or have the gifts to become lawyers or doctors, what about the next highest paying jobs—those that are creative, adventurous, or even dangerous in nature?

For example, firefighters, miners, underwater steel workers, and truck drivers have the highest risk jobs, so why don’t they have the highest paying jobs?

Those folks we cannot pay enough. I am of the opinion that firefighters are grossly underpaid, and that that is bad, but if you ask any of them, their passion outweighs the pay. I admire that.

So lots of issues to consider, but not just pay. In this economy pay is critical, as is security. But don’t just err on pay or security.
And by all means use college to sample things you never tried before.

Extra Money Secrets for Students

So for the average student, with less savvy, a paper route, delivering pizza, baby sitting, shoveling snow, cutting grass and walking dogs are all job options. You don’t need experience for these jobs and these are good ways to make extra money that shouldn’t interfere with school and homework.

One often ignored secret way to make money for the student is with Paid Focus Groups, not the ones that are advertised online which can or might not be a scam, but the real thing. There is a technique to finding them, which is well taught is Mark Springer’s excellent book “Focus Group Insider Secrets” which details his years of experience doing focus groups and how he learned to play the system a bit. Its all perfectly legal. Advertising agencies just want to pay you to look at their ads, taste and try their products, and give them feedback. As Mark points out, he once got $500.00 for 4 hours on a Sunday from a major airline to review their luxury offerings.

You can also join survey sites. You should really be sure to do some research into the legitimate survey sites so that your personal information is not sold or used in some way that you are not okay with. You can make extra money filling out surveys, however, the going is slow, and you aren’t about to make a fortune in this way. Often the payout is so small per survey it doesn’t make sense for your time.

If you have never tried the focus group route before, give it a try but be sure to read Mark’s book, which for 9.95 is a deal. It also lists group recruiters so you can easily sign up.

You can also make extra money using your computer. Although there are lots of scams out there, there are legitimate ways to make money if you are willing to take the time to find these opportunities. One of the most popular ways to make extra money these days is by writing a blog. Before trying this, it’s recommended that you do some research into how this works and to keep in mind some of the suggestions and tactics if you really want this to work and you want to make money. You are better off choosing a particular topic that is ranked high in the search engines. You can make extra money with your blog, however, you need to realize that the way you make the money is by running small advertisements on your page. You only get paid if someone clicks on those links. So the first step to make
extra money with your blog is to write on a popular topic.

The second step is to write often and to fill your writing with keywords that will drive traffic to you blog. Then, once people are visiting your blog site on a regular basis, you have a good chance that they will click on the advertisements appearing on your site, and only then will you make extra money.

There are other websites that allow you to write reviews of books, movies and products. You will get make extra money, the more you write, and the more popular your subject matter is. Again, you can make extra money doing this, however, this is a slow process and you have to have lots of time and patience in order to make this work.

Many Anxiety Treatments Available for the Stressed Student

Society is increasingly neurotic even outside of the current economic climate.

Anxiety has become a medicated condition, but it is more endemic to our habits, to the rush, rush rush we all go through, in a world where we have been taught that faster is better. But paradoxically, slow is better. And actually more effective. And, it relieves the anxiety. It’s the difference between a shotgun and a sniper. The sniper will hit his mark cleanly, and effectively. But the shotgun can miss, or not hit the target with sufficient force to be effective. It’s the belief that scattering the effort will work. It can. But consider the effort.

In college as a student I started to get anxiety attacks, there was nothing more terrible, and I was willing to try anything for just a little relief. I was a poor student, unable to afford expensive counseling, and so the only anxiety treatment available to me was drugs. Back then they didn’t have the meds we have now, drugs like Xanax, Librium, and Valium, as well as non-prescription self-medication with pot and alcohol. But all these  anxiety treatments did was create a cycle of dependency, whether they were doctor prescribed, or self-administered. Although sedatives can be a great relief from a sudden anxiety attack, in the long run they make you even more unable to cope with your problems.

After these, and several other anxiety treatments, I finally discovered meditation. I cannot tell you how much it changed my life. No matter what problems you face in your life, meditation is really a panacea. The only problem is that it requires a lot of self discipline and at least an hour a day time commitment. For a while, I tried more conventional anxiety treatments, such as therapy, but I found these unsettling.

I could talk about my problems, and that provided some kind of relief, but although the strength of the anxiety attacks decreased somewhat, they still persisted until I got into meditation. Many people will say that you need to go to a doctor for anxiety treatments, but these people have not discovered the do-it-yourself method of calming the mind and body which I have profited from personally.

After years of therapy I can safely say that Meditation did more for me than years of therapy. The therapy was a bandaid, and became a dependency of its own. I don’t rule it out to help those in crisis, and by all means take the meds to alleviate the symptoms (THEY WORK!) But begin to meditate. An excellent book I used to get me started was Tobin Blakes “The Power of Stillness” which is available from Amazon. I’ll be adding a live link soon, so please check back.

You may be plagued by anxiety attacks, and just knowing that if they do come, you have a quick and easy way to stop them is really a precious bit of reassurance. Whatever anxiety treatments you are using, it is still best to have an emergency weapon against the dreaded panic attack. If they are severe, use a doctor and take the medications. If you want a long-lasting change, learn to meditate. It will change your life. You will learn joy.

Jobs for Students in The Recession

Many students entering their college years need to find gainful employment during their four-year educational experience. Finding jobs for students attending college is not always easy but it is almost a necessity for pupils who have financial needs. Jobs for students can also lead to future job opportunities after graduation so think hard before jumping into work while attending school.

I worked as a bartender during my entire college career. This is among the dream jobs for students who want to earn money while keeping a finger on the pulse of the social life. I loved bartending and I liked the idea of making quite a bit of money in relatively little time. I also got to socialize while working.

Upper classmen recognized me from the bar and I became really popular on campus. Unfortunately, these kinds of jobs for students pose a great problem: many younger students flirted with the idea that I would serve them because I was only nineteen years old when I started bartending.

However, there was no way that I was going to lose my position just to gain some friends. It is hard to come across jobs for students like tending bar. Many managers frown on hiring students because of the underage problem. The Liquor Control Board is another concern that many younger people don’t really think about.

While I did enjoy my years of bartending while attending college, I really wish that I would have put more thought into my decision. I graduation with a Bachelor’s in English which basically qualified me to speak and write. No one wanted to listen or read. Of course, I fell back on my on-the-job skills I earned as a bartender. I tended bar in different places for over thirteen years total.

If I would have thought about trying to look into different jobs for students that related to writing or editing, I may have had an easier time finding my niche after graduation. You may initially think that jobs for students are temporary positions but they often lead to your future employment after school is done. Employers want to see your experience, not just your degree.

The next time you consider your summer employment while attending school, think about what you want to do for a living after you graduate. You may find jobs for students that relate to your specific area of interest. Those are the employment opportunities that will help you establish yourself as a professional in the future.

Finding a Cheap Airline Ticket in a Pinch

I’ve known a few people in my lifetime that had that deep rare gift for finding discounts and the I made that even more mysterious. When you add the availability of coupons if you dig for them, web offers and the like, cheap travel for college students is really accessible.

There is sort of an art in finding a cheap airplane ticket but the savvier you are on the web the better. There are sites galore, craigslist, ebay-yes folks sell tickets on there, not to mention or exclude experion, priceline and travelocity. And I love Shatner, miss Boston Legal terribly, and so try to use priceline whenever I can.

Recently I was going to Portugal from New York City, acutally from Newark Airport, which is in Jersey across from the city. I needed to find the cheapest ticket I could with the economy, but it was a wedding and I could not miss it.

So here is Mark’s find a cheap airfare basic tactics:

First, you need a baseline. I went to travelocity and checked flights. I wanted to see how cheaply I could go with no work. Sometimes you won’t save enough to justify all the work.

Second, check ebay. I found a ticket that someone was selling for Madrid, but it was too far away, and would have required getting from Madrid to Portugal. That negated the savings.

Third, craigslist.com.
I use three tactics on craigslist. One is I post an ad simply ASKING if anyone has the ticket I need in case anyone has one that they want to sell or exchange.

Second I look in “et cetera jobs” for “courier” and see if anyone needs a person to run something to Lisbon. This is more prevalent than you realize. Often somebody needs an important envelope taken to a firm or individual who doesn’t want to risk it with customs. It’s important enough for a plane fare, and hotel and even meals in the foreign country. And in this economy don’t rule out barter for a ticket on craigslist. these are my primary target methods. but with craigslist I make sure I post in all nearby areas. I live in New York, so I also include Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Connecticut in my ads. You have to post each place individually because Craig wants to keep things local.

I never learned how to get a cheap airplane ticket in college thought friends got good at it. But I have learned a few tricks just by stumbling blindly through the airline industry and from crafty friends.

The final result was that I got contacted from craigslist Connecticutt from a person who had a voucher for Iberian Airways for 400.00 and needed to sell or barter it. It was for the dates I needed (but expired shortly thereafter) so we actually worked a barter of me fixing his laptop and doing some remote ongoing maintenance and I got the voucher. The total for the ticket was 520, so it cost me 120 plus time. Not bad. $400 of legwork paid off. Thanks to the internet. Hope this article was helpful to you, and best wishes.

Finding Job Fairs in a Recession

I probably would not want to be graduating anywhere in the world right now, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t jobs. You just have to find them a bit more aggressively.

College graduates taking that initial step toward utilizing that new degree should visit the many different job fairs that are held across the nation on a fairly regular basis.

Why? Because they are free, and they are actually looking for recruits. Many of then the very human resources folks whom would see you are there, and you can make a great initial impression. All companies, even in this economy, have to renew their workforce. There are jobs, you have to go get them.

Job fairs vary from profession to profession, but most offer the job seeker the opportunity to speak with representatives and recruiters from various companies looking for qualified individuals to join their organization. Some companies conduct the application and interview process on the spot, which is a great way for the job seeker to get his or her foot in the door a lot faster. Job fairs afford the career professional to also interview the perspective employers to learn a bit about the company and what the requirements of the position are, to create a base of information that will come in handy when choosing between multiple employment offers.

Health care job fairs are aggressively held especially for hard to fill jobs. Nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physicians’ assistants, are difficult to find. The health care industry is growing daily. Job fairs for health care professionals seeking new opportunities the chance to browse around at the different health care delivery systems, how they are different and yet the same. Since this country is entering into what could become a health care crisis, new graduate nurses especially, as well as residents and interns are looking at the number of employment opportunities available to them in a number of locations. Job fairs are a great place to compare benefits, sign on bonuses, and relocation and travel packages offered by competing agencies and health care delivery systems. Nurses can also complete continuing education units (CEUs) toward license renewal at health professional job fairs by completing a class or lecture.

If you are not so picky about what your career will be, but want to help people then it is really a reliable and beneficial technique to target health care, and other caring professions. They need folks all the time.

Another way to do the job search in health care specifically is to contact the local hospitals and care facilities and see if they are conducting their own fairs internally. Often larger facilities and corporations have their own, but they are poorly advertised so not everyone can find them.

Better, try google and type in “job fair insert your city here” and use the quotes and without quotes. The quotes make google return the listings that have exactly that key phrase. And should return lots of results if you live in a large city.

Then, prepare your resume, dress properly, and go. Remember, act like you work for each person you speak to. Pretend each hello and request for materials is an interview. It’s a way of thinking that makes you confident, and you never know, the person hiring might be staring you in the eye.

The job hunt is a numbers game, but just do everything you can to increase the numbers both in quality and quantity.
Hope this was helpful.

Best of Luck
